As many of you sports fans out there know, Alex Rodriguez hit the big 500 today. But is 500 such a big number in today's world? There have already been 22 major league baseball players who have hit 500 home runs and by the end of this season the number will probably grow to 25. 500 homeruns use to be a set number for players to get into the hall of fame but with the steroid scandal and so many more players closing in on the big 500 will it still be the number to achieve in the future? From my perspective, I believe this number is still great but the new 500 will be 600. Only 5 players have hit more than six hundred homeruns, Slammin' Sammy Sosa being the most recent, and Ken Griffey Jr. is the only major league baseball player who is even close to achieving such greatness. With more and more power hitting players coming into MLB, there will be a lot more individuals achieving 500 making 600 that much better. So, as of right now, a-rod i am not impressed.

i completely agree with you. 500 is more of a common bench mark in modern baseball, rather than a big achievement. If more players are hittign the 500 mark, it means its less of a big deal than before.
I definitely think the hall of fame and the MLB in general need to adopt higher standards and not settle for mediocre anymore. And part of this is on the fans too. We have to be not so impressed with cheating and what is fast becoming "average" relatively speaking.
I think you might be completely missing the point. I hate the yankees and I hate arod even more. But everyone is making a big deal about it because he has been the fastest to reach the milestone. Didn't Big Hurt break 500 earlier this year? that wasn't all that hyped up. And yes, arod is an asshole, his wife wears dirty shirts, and I certainly agree with you that #500 is getting old, but it could be getting people excited because if arod continues his pace, he will shatter bonds's record whatever he sets the record to be, and could even start his own club, the 800 club.

Hey im not down on Arod i was just saying the i do not believe 500 homeruns is that impressive anymore. I do agree with Jimbo however that the fact that he is the youngest plaeyer is impressive. Also to answer Jimbo's question, I would rather have anyone else hold the crown.
500 home runs is an accomplishment in any era, but, as you all have been saying, it is not as prestigious as it used to be. What should be recognized about Rodriguez's feat is the timetable in which he did it. the 500 homers isn't the big deal. The 500 homers at 32 years of age is the big deal. He has a shot at passing Bonds in about 7-8 years. That's the big deal.

That is less then .01% of all the players that have every played the game. 500 home runs is still a colossal milestone and a rarity. As for the ignorant red sox fan that said “arod is an asshole” you are just jealous because of his contract and his natural ability. Manny is the real asshole. No one admires their home runs and rubs pitchers the wrong way more then that fat ass.
